Darren Rowse’s blog ProBlogger is one of the best blogs on blogging which receives millions of page impressions every month. Mr. Rowse once did a survey amongst his blog’s readers as to which is the best blogging platform. The majority voted for self hosted WordPress. There are too many reasons that set WordPress apart from its competitors. In this post I will concentrate on only the plug-ins of WordPress.

Suppose you own a Blogger/Blogspot blog and you wish to add some share buttons to all your posts. Blogger has little or no apps to do that. The little ones that it does have, have limited capabilities. You will have to install a third party app like Share-This to achieve this result. Similarly the commenting system of Blogger is very poor and usually people install and use the Disqus commenting system for their Blogger blogs.

 

Using third party apps has a serious drawback. You are giving away a lot of your valuable content to third parties. If they some day switch off your account due to any reason then you will loose all your data. Although I shared examples about Blogger but similar arguments hold for other blogging platforms. I mean others except WordPress.

The official site of WordPress says about its plug-ins – “WordPress is infinitely extensible. One of the core philosophies of WordPress is to keep the core code as light and fast as possible but to provide a rich framework for the huge community to expand what WordPress can do, limited only by their imagination.”

No this is not an exaggeration. I have seen many unbiased WordPress users echo the same words.

Below I have collected 25 free WordPress AJAX plug-ins that I hope will help you design better WordPress blogs.

1. WP Ajax Edit Comments

Users can edit their own comments for a limited time, while admins can edit all comments.

2. Quttera Web Malware Scanner

The plug-in scans the content of your blog for web-based malware in its various formats. The data is investigated on the remote servers by the Quttera malicious content detection engines. No files will be changed on your web-site. It addresses the malware hidden behind HTML, JavaScript, Dynamic HTML, AJAX, Flash, PDF, or other valid programming languages and formats.

3. WP Movie Ratings

WP Movie Ratings is a word press plug-in that makes rating movies very easy. At its core is a bookmark let, which combined with Internet Movie Database and a little bit of AJAX magic lets you rate movies with just one click.

4. Floating Comments Form Fixed Scroll Position

This lightweight plug-in creates a form that is placed by default at the left of the content, and is fixed to the top of the page once it gets to it. Floating Comments serves as an alternative form to post comments that is very handy compared to the traditional comments form.

5. Three WP Ajax Search

Enables Ajax searches for content. The default settings work automatically with Twenty ten and derivatives. It uses Word Press’ built-in search. Works well with Relevancies because Ajax search doesn’t actually do any parsing itself.

6. Rognone

Rognone is an automated and animated content visualizer. It uses Ajax to fetch latest contents from your blog, and then draws them on the page according to a floating spiral layout, continuously animated and updated.

7. WP Ajaxify Comments

The WP Ajaxify Comments Word Press plug-in hooks into any Word Press theme and adds AJAX functionality to the comment form: When the comment form is submitted, the plug-in sends the data to the Word Press backend without reloading the entire page. In case of an error, the plug-in shows a popup overlay containing the error message.

8. AJAX Thumbnail Rebuild

AJAX Thumbnail Rebuild allows you to rebuild all thumbnails on your site. There are already some plug-ins available for this, but they have one thing in common: All thumbnails are rebuilt in a single step. This works fine when you don’t have that many photos on your site.

9. Ajax Weather

Ajax weather service is developed for the users not familiar with computer systems, for example, the elderly. Included in web pages as a left/right bar, this module delivers a local weather information automatically without user’s intervention.

10. WD3K Ajax Sliding Contact Form

This plug-in generates nice jQuery powered sliding contact form in the left border of your WP blog. Contains client side validation and Ajax powered mailing, so no page refresh is required. Admin section allows you to configure all form labels including error messages and form status messages.

11. MLB Standings

MLB Standings adds the ability to display the standings for a division of Major League Baseball (MLB) on your blog via a sidebar widget or template tag. This is ideal for team fan blogs who want to show how their team is doing in the standings. You can also highlight your team in the standings.

12. Plug-in Organizer

This plug-in allows you to do the following: 1. Change the order that your plug-ins are loaded. 2. Selectively disable plug-ins by any post type or word press managed URL. 3. Adds grouping to the plug-in admin age.

13. Qtranslate Slug

Qtranslate is a nice plug-in but unfortunately today is outdated. Qtranslate Slug is an add-on to QTranslate, which adds support for permalinks translations and fix some QTranslate deficiencies since word press 3.0.

14. Protected Posts Logout Button

This plug-in simply adds a logout button to the content of any password protected post. Sometimes clients want a password protected page to share information with privileged individuals and the default 10 days for the cookie to expire is too long for their liking. So I wrote a little plug-in to do this with AJAX and set the cookie to expire immediately, well actually 10 days in the past.

15. Login With Ajax

Login With Ajax is for sites that need user logins or registrations and would like to avoid the normal word press login pages, this plug-in adds the capability of placing a login widget in the sidebar with smooth AJAX login effects.

16. Ajax Contact Form

This plug-in will help you to send mail using Ajax from your word press site. You can design your own contact form from the admin. There will be a email list waiting for your review. There are several options for the contact that you can update later. You just need to put short code [ajaxcf] in any page/post.

17. Cardoza AJAX Search

This plug-in will allow your website visitors to search the posts of your site without page refresh.

18. Cookillian

Cookillian will automatically detect if a visitor is located in one of the countries defined by you – likely the countries affected by the EC Cookie Directive and will optionally disable any cookies that are set from within Word Press or a 3rd party plug-in. The user will then be presented with an fully customizable alert about cookies, and given the option to opt in or out of using cookies.

19. Ad Manager

Light, and at the same time advanced advertisement manager. Provides you the ability to select context conditions for displaying ads, like page location / location index / page or user class.

20. IMU Calculator

IMU Calculator is a Word Press plug-in for owners of Italian real estate that allows to calculate the new Italian Local Council Property Tax.

21. Manage Upload Types

Manage Upload Types enables an administrator to see and change the list of file types that are permitted as file uploads to the media library. This is accomplished by adding an Ajax driven table to a panel on the Media Settings page. Each row has a delete link. Confirmation is required for deletions. There is also a small form to allow additional rows to be added. The form is aligned with the table and contains two text entry boxes.

The concept of this plug-in is to open the Tell a Friend form in the popup window by clicking the button from the page (Sidebar, End of the post, pages).
