30 Stunning Droste Effect Examples
In 1904 the Droste cocoa powder, which was one of the main Dutch brands, displayed an image on its tins and boxes. The image was of a nurse holding a tray with a cup of hot chocolate and a box with the same image i.e. the box again contained the image of the nurse holding a tray having a cup and a box and this new box again had the same image and so on and so forth. Theoretically speaking this effect goes on until infinity but practically it continues only as long as the resolution of the image allows it to continue. An analogy can be drawn from a flower placed between two plane mirrors. One mirror will form the image of the rose and this image will behave as an object for the second mirror and hence a new image will be formed in the second mirror and then this image will behave as an object for the first mirror and so another image will be formed in the first mirror and so on. Theoretically speaking infinite rose images will get formed in both the mirrors but the number of images will be restricted by the intensity of light falling on the rose.
The effect soon became popular and others began to use it. This effect in images is known as the Droste effect by the name of the cocoa company which first used it.
Therefore the Droste effect can be defined as the effect of a picture appearing within itself over and over again i.e. the appearance is recursive in nature, the smaller version of the image contains an even smaller version and so on and so forth.
